Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture, Japan

Wow. I never realized how much I miss traveling until I got back out into the world. So far it's been completely crazy, normal, unpredictable, fun and so much more. There is something about experiencing the ups and downs that makes you feel alive. I like nothing more than breaking my routine. After spending a year with no routine, then getting back into my 'old' life, it's been incredibly freeing to feel this all again.

To give you an idea of what's cause these emotions to come back, I'll take you through a rundown of my first few days away.

The flight over and all the tribulations that came along with it have already been documented on here. What I didn't tell you about was that after finally finding my hostel on the first night and making my bed in the dark, I ended up waking up multiple times throughout the night before finally giving up on sleep. I got up, grabbed my camera and went for a walk around the neighborhood. Nearby were many typical Tokyo streets and a massive temple and market. After that I went for a quick walk along the river before heading back to the hostel.

At this point I still needed to resolve my unplanned travel questions. With some assistance with the hostel staff I booked myself a bus ticket to the mountains but alas, wasn't scheduled to leave until the afternoon. I had hoped to leave in the morning but this gave me to opportunity to tour around Tokyo for a few hours. I grabbed my camera again and wandered over to the subway and headed for downtown. When I got there I wandered through the streets before walking to the Imperial Palace.

After stopping to pick up some department store basement lunch, I made it back to my hostel, pick up my bags and head back on the subway for Shinjuku to catch my bus. Unfortunately I underestimated how long it was going to take to get there and inadvertently left myself 15 minutes to get out of the subway and find the bus terminal. A few minutes of panic set in before I calmed down and used my brain to find out where I was going. I watched a few buses drive around the corner and I started to follow them. This technique managed to lead me directly to the terminal but did not help me speak Japanese to the staff when I got there. Astonishingly, I managed to decipher that I needed a wifi connection to view my ticket. Luckily I walked outside, found free wifi, and got on my bus for Hakuba.

The reason I was traveling to this random place in the mountains of Japan is because I have two great friends working up there. I met Hayley and Danny while working at Mt Buller in Australia and they were kind enough to invite me to visit them in Japan. Me being a sucker for friends and intercontinental travel couldn't resist the opportunity.

When I arrived in Hakuba I was met at the bus station and had my first reunion with someone that I had met on my travels. This was an excellent experience because my year away felt a lot like an isolated part of my life that never really interacted with my former life. Now I was back to being 'normal' and yet was hanging out with friends I'd made in Australia. Anyways, our first stop was for dinner and we managed to find a Mexican restaurant where I enjoyed watching Danny eat a chimichanga with chop sticks to meet his New Years resolution. After a brief stop for snacks we made it back to the Luna Hotel so I could get settled in and get over the last bit of jet lag. I was surprised to find out upon my arrival that this hotel was not only staffed almost entirely by Aussies, but every guest was also Australian. This was actually a nice surprise because I love hearing the accent but also meant that there were people who would appreciate my Freo Dockers beanie.

After getting barely enough sleep, I woke up bright and early to get some brekky before making my way up to the adjacent ski hill, HappoOne. The ski lift is a mere one minute walk from the hotel which makes life much easier if you're not renting ski gear. Either way, it was a nice surprise to see that the lift tickets were cheaper than Canada even though the mountain is huge and the caliber to host several races during the 1998 Winter Olympics. I guess the most fortunate part of the day was that we managed to get half a foot of snow overnight, then had the clouds burn off in the early morning for a stunning bluebird. My first day of skiing in Japan was one of the better days I've had, and the whole time I couldn't believe it was really happening.

To top the day off, we headed over to a restaurant called Double Black where Hayley and Danny knew the cook so we managed to get nearly every item on the menu served to us. We sat down and the food just kept coming and coming. By the time it was finished we ate our way through 10 courses. With the food and a large beer, the meal cost around $26. Unreal.

Given how great my first full in Hakuba was, it may be hard to believe that I was more excited about day two. We were scheduled to be catching a full day tour that would take us to see a troup of macaques that have learned how to stay warm in winter by spending most of their time in a hot springs bath. I'd seen this before on some BBC show and was thrilled to go see it for myself. The monkeys themselves were very docile and allowed people to get much too close. This made for some extraordinary photos.

After we got over the thrill of seeing monkeys up close, the tour took us to a local sake brewery for lunch.

After eating lunch we had enough time to go to a nearby museum and see Great Waves (most well-known Japanese piece of art). Then we were off to Zenkoji Temple. This complex is a mixture of Shinto and Buddhist themes and the temple itself is around 1400 years old. That brought our entertaining tour, and all the information I learned along the way, to an end.

We finished off the day with a stop at a local restaurant to eat an unnatural amount of sushi and maki. And of course no day is complete without picking up some Calpis and chocolate from the local supermarket.

This brought another fantastic day to a close and brings the end of this post. I'm having an unbelievable time so far. Hope you're enjoying the ride so far.

Tokyo, Japan

13:51- Cell phone just went dark for the flight and the remainder of the trip. Time to listen to the safety demo in Japanese.

13:52- Faked out. Demo in English, French and Japanese subtitles. Not learning anything.

13:59- Engine 1 starts with a big puff of black smoke and a high pitched whine. Bad omen?

14:20- Yeah so we're still sitting on the tarmac. Pushed back and haven't moved since. I'm losing hope fast. But I am making good progress on finishing the book I've been reading since August.

14:22- The captain just informed us we need to go back to the gate to check a maintenance indicator. Great. Do you remember where we parked?

14:36- I think they just did a reboot of the plane. Confidence level = low.

14:53- So yeah, not going to complain about being restless in the terminal anymore. Spent 75 minutes in this plane so far and have a lap around the tarmac to show for it.

14:58- I'd say it's pretty optimism to be handing out Custom Declaration Cards at this point. Still at the gate, engines not running.

15:00- I'm going to go ahead and wait for the plane gets in the air before I fill out any forms.

15:04- Captain says everything ok. We just sat on the tarmac for over an hour. Everything is clearly not ok.

15:09- phone is going dark once again. Hopefully that spurs on this flight.

15:10- more black smoke out of the engine. Great. Let's do this!

15:12- How much black smoke is too much black smoke?

15:18- We're moving again. Movie time. Social Network. Go.

15:24- I'm wearing my Spaghettios shirt today and regretting it. Sun is shining in, lighting up my yellow shirt, which is reflecting in the screen, which makes it impossible to see the movie.

15:27- You can watch pretty much any new movie you want on the plane and and the guy beside me decided on Sex and the City 2.

15:33- So this plane actually flies. Neat.

17:34- Social Network was pretty good. Not earth shattering but I enjoyed it. It did motivate me to fill out my declaration forms, so it was good for that.

17:40- Still can't believe I'm flying to Japan right now. Or that I haven't stood up in 4 hours.

17:41- Random album that I have, but am listening to on the entertainment system is Ivory Tower by Chilly Gonzales.

17:42- Lights are out. Probably means i should try to sleep.

17:52- Will be flying over Alaska shortly.

17:53- It's so strange to be on a long haul flight and not be emotionally unstable. Almost seems crazy that that was just how I was when flying last year. Amazing how much I changed since last year and in the last 4 months since I've been back.

17:57- Angry Birds and Lebatard Show. See you in an hour.

20:10- Angry Birds Seasons, Flick Golf, Bejeweled, Tap Tap Revenge takes down an hour. Theres lots of apps for wasting time.

20:12- look at the time and it's still light out!!

20:24- Going in for another movie. This one is called Inside Job and is about the financial crisis. If you're wondering, I'm hoping it'll put me to sleep.

22:10- Date Line: International. I'm there.

22:11- With that today ends early and tomorrow is already mostly over.

22:15- Don't know why but im going to try to make the entire flight (delay included) without a bathroom break. This is a terrible idea.

16:04- Time change

16:04- It's officially a movie extravaganza. Watching the Town.

16:38- Two hours to go. My ass has been numb for too long.

17:20- My last terrible Air Canada meal is out of the way. Just need to deal with the aftertaste for the rest of the night.

17:21- Here's a little secret. I'm going to the mountains tomorrow and I have no idea how I'm getting there.

17:53- So yeah. Don't particularly know how to get to my hostel tonight either. And I don't have any Yen with me. The next 24 hours could be quite the adventure.

17:54- For those of you still keeping track. No bathroom break yet and still no standing. 11 hours and counting. 0% chance this is healthy.

17:57- I'm nervous about wandering through a strange city at night. Maybe cause its one of the biggest in the world.

18:21- it's snowing in Tokyo. Sigh.

18:22- Nap time.

18:30- fail. still can't sleep on planes.

18:31- the pressure of altitude has caused my injured foot to swell. Barely got my shoe back on.

18:40- I get to see Danny and Hayley tomorrow. Holy crap.

18:41- another development I forgot to mention, I'm not even spending 3 days in Edmonton when I get back. Running back to Saskatoon in two weeks.

18:52- That landing did a good job of waking me up.

18:58- Considering it's 3am in Edmonton I feel alright.

18:59- Did you know Narita is 33 miles from Tokyo?

19:05- Good news. Not snowing. Bad news. Pouring rain.

19:10- I assume japan is one big wifi network.

19:15- Moving feels very good but this hallway is nuts.

19;27 Dropping arigato like it's going out of style.

19:29- Two and a half hours to get my bag, clear customs and make it to my hostel before the door is locked at 10. Game on.

19:37- Bathroom relief!

19:40- In!!!!!!!

19:49- One ATM in the whole place. Ahhhh!!!

19:54- Lost. Confused. Tired. Stressed. Sweaty. Thus is awesome.

19:57- Found a train. We'll see how this goes.

20:12- Saw a guy fall asleep while standing on the train.

20:25- I keep listening for the drivers announcements even though I have no clue what he's saying.

20:30- Hour and a half before I end up on the streets. Go train go.

20:50- Most people at home think I'm weird because I have an iPod touch and an iPhone. In japan, I'm the poor kid.

21:00- One hour to go!!

21:09- Make or break connection here. Signage is not good. Can't find a system map. Just hoping at this point.

21:14- Six stations to go and a fifteen minute walk. Shit, this is going to be close.

21:16- Doing some serious self-reassurance at the moment. That's a pretty good indicator of uncertainty.

22:13- Well that got pretty dodgy there for a while. Directions started out great and ended poorly. Got lost 4 times but managed to make it into the hostel with 10 minutes to spare. Step one of the unknown journey is complete. Tomorrow I try to find my way to Hakuba. Glad that my day is over. I'm so tired that I'm not even going out to explore or take a shower to deal with my smell. Thanks for reading!

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

7:15- here I am back on the road again traveling halfway across the world. I woke up this morning in my own bed and the next time I see a bed I'll be in Tokyo. Feels more than a little strange to be taking off again. It's even a little bit scary being on my own again. I definitely had a 'what the hell am I doing' moment while packing my bags last night. Anyways, I'm currently sitting on the Sky Shuttle destined for Edmonton International. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

7:20- sitting in a bus driving on the pothole filled streets of Edmonton makes it really difficult to typenznshxjjsjz

7:22- oh yeah, goodbye normal sleep patterns. See you in a few weeks.

7:36- Yaaayyyy! The smelly guy got off the bus early.

7:37- Booooo! Still smells.

7:39- someone managed to roll their car going into the parking lot at the airport. Emergency vehicles everywhere. Entrance to parking lot blocked. That's talent. It's a 30kmh zone.

7:46- not a good start. Ticket not found in self check-in. Agent on phone.

8:05- false alarm. Everythings good and I'm through security.

8:06- why do they have over size golf carts in airports? Do wheelchairs not work in here?

8:20- Pretty excited that I just confirmed Miss January is coming with me to a wedding in March.

8:22- Got another tempting email today. Dad offered me a chance to fly down to Thailand. I miss being completely free to take random trips like that.

9:14- Just annihilated an hour on the Internet. Time for a walk.

9:16- Still rockin' a nice limp from Monday's floor hockey.

9:21- Trying to resist the urge to eat bad food. Always hard for me while traveling.

9:34- Two laps of the airport complete. Lots of old people going to Mexico today.

9:47- Feeling a little apprehensive right now. Might just be hungry though.

9:48- Air Canada thinks they can board by rows starting at the back. That never works.

9:50- 'we would like to call forward all passengers seated in rows 20-32. Or if you are an Elite member you can board at anytime.' translation, we want this to be orderly but aren't concerned enough to make the special people wait.

9:53- Airplane time!!!! Wheeeeee!!!

10:21- Not gunna lie. Ready for a nap within the first 10 minutes of flight. Isn't the rule stay awake while flying west to fend off jet lag?

10:35- Man, Asians can sleep anywhere. Including on my shoulder.

11:13- Is it a requirement for pilots to have deep, pleasant voices?

10:31- time change. Which can only mean I'm in Van.

10:45- Upon further testing it has been determined there is no cocaine on my hands. Thanks security.

10:51- And now I find myself staring at the gate of departure I went through last January and I've been hit with a mountain of emotions that I felt the last time I was here. Going to need some thinking time.

10:53- Also trying to avoid eating crappy Japanese food as my last Canadian meal.

12:32- Following got settled and down to sleep and I was awoken with the news that my gate has moved to the other end of the terminal. Ugh.

12:44- Now that I'm awake it's time for Timmy's.

12:49- that's enough bad food for a while. Ugh.

12:54- Just hit me. I'm leaving the country again. What the he'll was I thinking?

12:55- Every time I come here I wonder over and over why I don't live in Vancouver.

12:58- The PA system in here is going to cause some hearing damage.

13:04- Just watched Egyptian television on my iPhone. That was neat.

13:22- Officially bored and I haven't even gotten on my second plane of the day.

13:26- Getting restless. Just went on an iPhone photo binge.

13:29- Airline agent just said 12 words in English then talked for a good 2 minutes in Japanese. Feeling like I missed out.

13:33- Literally the tallest person on this flight.

13:43- All set and settled on my last plane of the day.

13:45- Still left wondering why the cute girl never sits beside me on the plane.

13:47- Only 10.5 hours til Narita!

13:48- Going in stages with the diary. Signing off til Japan.

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Here I am. The countdown is up. My leave is over. Tomorrow is return to the life I once knew. Except that I don't know that life anymore. The faces are different, the structure altered, expectations changed. I'm entering into a new phase of my life, and again I have no idea what to expect.

When I left work, and Canada I faced an unknown world and an undefined adventure. I had no idea what to expect and I was terrified. So much that it hindered my ability to enjoy myself for the first while. Eventually things turned, got better, and now when faced with the same situation, I'm a little excited. The unknown isn't scary anymore; it's interesting. This is just one of the personal developments that I've noticed over the last year and one of the reasons I'm happy that I got to experience everything I did. At times I wish it'd never ended, but now I'm glad it's over because I know that I'm going to be entering a new phase of my life that will be filled with it's own unknown adventures. And now I'm better prepared for it.

With that, I'd like to say thank you for reading my gibberish (heavy pun intended) over the past year. I was thrilled that not only I could bring many of my friends and family along for the ride, but more that anyone cared at all. All of the kind words along the way helped me keep going when I didn't want to, helped me taking photos when I was tired, and helped me realize how lucky I was to see all these places.

How lucky was I? Here's a list of random things that happened in the last year.

Whitefish, Montana, United States of America

Yet again, I'm way behind in keeping this blog up to date so here is another rapid fire summary of my life lately.

-Came back to Saskatoon on December 19 and spent a few days visiting with friends. Got to see Jenn, Adam, and long lost Jason.
-Worked again for my parents with some commercial photography.
-Had Chinese food on Christmas Eve with my family.
-Opened presents with my parents and my sister and her family. Followed that with dinner at my Aunt and Uncle's house and a sleepover.
-Left Saskatoon bright and early on Boxing Day and headed for the border and the snow of Whitefish, MT.
-Skied two beautiful days with lots of fresh snow which was more than enough to wear me out. But I used the next day to go for a long run and make it hurt even more.
-Took four hours to write.
-Skied again and set a new personal record for skiing from the top to the bottom of the mountain of 2.5 minutes.
-Celebrated New Years Eve with a fine dinner, a performance and a movie with 16 family members.

And with that, it's a new year. I made it through 2010 and all the highs and lows that it brought.I guess I should have expected the roller coaster after the way the year started but I have been taken aback by everything that I've been through this year. And the best part is, I wouldn't change it for anything, because after it all, I'm a better person. That makes me excited to see what 2011 will bring...

...except for going back to work. Only 3 sleeps left of freedom.
