Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (2)

Some of you may have noticed from my updates on Facebook that I experienced quite the storm on Saturday in Melbourne.

I had just returned to Melbourne the day before and had spent the morning at the State Library (while creating a personal birthday message for Mr Day). After that I wandered randomly into the centre of the city. I was looking for a place to check my email and located the nearest Maccas. Of course, I didn't eat at Maccas, but rather at the neighbouring Red Rooster. This restaurant was located in the basement of a downtown mall at the corner of Elisabeth and Bourke. Little did I know that this was possibly the worst place to be in the event of a flash flood.

So I'm sitting downstairs eating lunch, when I hear a loud noise over the sound of my headphones. I turn around and look upstairs and see what was going on. What I saw was rain and hail coming down horizontally due to the extremely strong winds. After finishing my lunch I went upstairs to see for myself and quickly realized that I would need to remove my shoes if I had any hope of walking outside due to the developing rivers running down the streets. The reason my location was potentially one of the worst to be is that everything drains from 3 directions to the point I was.

I walked back down the stairs to the restaurant I was just in to discover that it was quickly flooding as well. Then I took out both my cameras and captured the following images and videos. Enjoy.

  2. Not sure. All I heard was that there was 19mm in 18 minutes. Hence the flooding. Plus there was hail that jammed up a lot of storm sewers.
